Detention the Game
Detention the Game was my introduction to site-specific work and game development. This escape game, thought up and executed in conjunction with my friend Kai Girard, was fully integrated into a classroom at my high school. In the process of designing the game, we experimented with linear solve orders as well as non-linear and parallel puzzle orders. We looked into how each structure affected gameplay in different group sizes.
To set up the game, "hooligans" (players) were given detention slips for various offenses ranging from sleeping in class to nudity. These slips served as tickets to detention. Upon arrival, students were required to give up their phones to be stored in a safe. While sneaking around the inattentive teacher, "Mr. James," they were required to find clues and solve puzzles in order to get their precious phones back and escape detention.
